Facebook has appointed Xiaomi’s Global VP Hugo Barra to lead the VR business.
Hugo Barra will lead Facebook virtual reality initiatives including the Oculus VR headset section.
“I’m excited that Hugo Barra is joining Facebook to lead all of our virtual reality efforts, including our Oculus team. Hugo’s in China right now, so here we are together in VR. It seems fitting,” said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a brief Facebook update sharing the news.
Earlier, Hugo Barra announced his retirement from Xiaomi to embark on a new adventure back in Silicon Valley.
Facebook founder and CEO mark Zuckerberg announced Barra’s appointment as VR head including the oculus team.
“I’ve known Hugo for a long time, starting when he helped develop the Android operating system, to the last few years he’s worked at Xiaomi in Beijing bringing innovative devices to millions of people,” Zuckerberg wrote on his Facebook page late Wednesday.
Hugo Barra’s exposure in Chinese market may have been influenced Facebook to hire him as a VP of virtual reality wing.
During his tenure, Xiaomi Global wing has expanded into Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, and more recently into 20 other markets including Russia, Mexico, and Poland.
“Hugo shares my belief that virtual and augmented reality will be the next major computing platform,” wrote Zuckerberg.
Hugo Barra replied on Zuckerberg post and stated- “that there’s no greater calling in our industry than taking breakthrough tech and making it available to the greatest number of people.”
